This is a summary of the *World Intellectual Property Indicators 2024* report, which shows the continued resilience of innovative activity.
**Patent Applications (2023)**
* Worldwide filings reached a record high of 3.55 million, an increase of 2.7% over 2022, marking a fourth consecutive year of growth.
* The main drivers of growth were applicants residing in China, the Republic of Korea, the United States of America (US), Japan, and India.
* China’s National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) received the most applications (1.68 million), followed by the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) (598,085), and the Japan Patent Office (JPO) (300,133).
* For the first time, applicants residing in India accounted for more than half (55.2%) of all patent applications received by India’s IP office.
* Asian IP Offices now account for approximately 70% of global patent, trademark, and design filings. Offices located in Asia received 68.7% of patent applications filed globally in 2023.
* Applications in computer technology continued to accelerate, accounting for 12.4% of total filings in 2022.
**Patent Grants and In Force (2023)**
* An estimated 2 million patents were granted worldwide, a 10.1% increase from 2022, the fastest growth rate since 2012.
* China issued the highest number of patents (920,797), followed by the US (315,245).
* India reported the fastest growth rate in grants at 149.4%.
* An estimated 18.6 million patents were in force across 140 jurisdictions. China had the highest number (5 million).
**Utility Models (2023)**
* Utility model applications worldwide increased by 3.9% to 3.13 million, with China accounting for around 98% of the global total.
**Other IP Filings (2023)**
* Trademark filings dropped to 11.6 million applications covering 15.2 million classes.
* Design filings rebounded, rising by 2.8% to reach 1.5 million.
